My Football page 2

I have attended about 99% of football grand finals during five decades in the local league. It was called the QAFL but was recently renamed AFLQ. The finals series that I attended were held at Perry Park now home of Soccer, the Gabba, Western Districts ground at Chelmer, Mayne ground at Mayne and in recent years at the Coorparoo Football Club's ground known as Giffin Park.

The 2003 finals were held there. The man at the entrance gate I have seen at various grounds over the years. His name is Roly Hallett. Here is a photo I took on the day of the Grand Finals. Roly is holding the Footy Record booklet. Roly told me that he had been “on the gate” for about ten years on The Gold Coast, Giffin Park and some other grounds.

2003 Grand Finals

It was a nice sunny day as is usual for footy finals time in Brisbane. The first game of the 2nds (reserves) commenced about 11.00am. Morningside 16.12 (108) defeated the Northern Eagles 13.7 (85).

The Firsts (seniors) game commenced about 2.00pm. The Morningside Panthers 17.13 (11.5) defeated the Mt. Gravatt Vultures 7.10 (52) in a one sided game.

In this photo I took shows an aerial contest.

There were two special events during the day. One was a running competition, over if I remember correctly 100mt where various footballers competed. Another was the presentations to footballers of the past decades who were given a special award.

2004 Grand Finals

2004 GF Morningside winnersAnother sunny day as these Grand Finals were held in September which has been very rare. I must check the previous dates sometime. They were held on Sunday the 19th of September 2004 at the usual venue at Giffin Park in Coorparoo.

The first game of the 2nds (reserves) commenced about 11.15am. The Southport Sharks 12.11 (83) defeated the Broadbeach Cats 5.7 (37). It was close game up until half time but Broadbeach only scored 1.3 for the rest of the game.

The Firsts (seniors) game commenced about 2.15pm. The Morningside Panthers 12.18 (90) defeated the Southport Sharks 12.11 (83) in a very exciting closely fought game. This means that Morningside have won back-to-back premierships.

The 2005 season, roll on winter!

There have been quite a few changes this year. The State League has been reduced to eight teams due to the “relegation” of The Western Magpies and The Mayne Tigers. For so many decades the Tigers have been a big force in the League and so it's sad that this has happened to it. Life must go on and I would expect that the Tigers will be back in the main/state league in the near future. Also the Western Magpies would hope to return to “the big time”.

This part is called “State League Division Two”. It will have twelve clubs. Aspley Hornets, Burleigh Bombers, Coolangatta Blues, Maroochydore/Northshore Roos, Mayne Tigers, Noosa Tigers, Palm Beach Currumbin Lions (PBC Lions), Sandgate Hawks, Springwood Pumas, Surfers Paradise Demons, Western Magpies and the Wilston Grange Gorillas.

The Mayne Tigers, Sandgate Hawks, Western Magpies and the Wilston Grange Gorillas are teams that were in the Senior QAFL “division” for many decades. So I suppose it will be a bit like old times with the older members of the various clubs reminiscing. I look forward to seeing the new young club's teams in action. I wish players in all “leagues/divisions” have an enjoyable injury free season and seasons ahead. Let the games begin.

2005 Grand Finals

There were changes to the 2005 finals venues and days. The Division one and two seniors were played on one day and the reserves of both divisions played on another day. In respect of the Grand Finals, the seniors were played on Sunday the 18th at the Gabba. It was a return to the Gabba as the previous Grand Final was in 1996, nine years ago and one hundred since the first game was played at the Gabba, 1905.

The Under 18s were better promoted throughout the year culminating in their Premiership match being played at the Gabba commencing at 8.30am. The Western Magpies 19.7 (121) defeated Southport Sharks 9.11 (65).

The Division Two game saw the Burleigh Bombers 10.17 (77) defeat the Palm Beach/Currumbin Lions 10.15 (75) which I consider the most entertaining match of the day.

The Division One game resulted in the Southport Sharks stopping the Morningside Panthers winning three Premiership flags in succession. The score was Southport 16.15 (111) to Morningside 6.14 (50). A rather dismal game. Here is a photo I took showing one of the occasions when the Panthers were in control. The announcements after each game were carried out by Richard Champion (Champs) on the ground which put a professional touch to proceedings.

2006 Grand Finals

More changes to venues this year which meant that the Division one Grand Finals were not held at the Gabba or Coorparoo (Giffin Park) but Carrara on the Gold Coast. I have not missed more than about ten AFLQ/QAFL Grand Finals in five decades. This year I didn't attend the Grand Finals because the Division One (Balfours Cup) and Division Two (Pineapple Hotel Cup) matches were held there and I didn't want to travel all that way but there was another family reason. Three matches, Grand Finals were held at Carrara on the 24th of September 2006.

The Division Two game saw the Western Magpies 19.13 (127) defeat the Noosa Tigers 11.10 (76). On the right is a photo I took at Chelmer the previous weekend when the Finals were played. This was during the 2nds game when the Western Magpies defeated Surfers Paradise. The reason I show this image is to point out the player wearing number 43 jumper. He is Matthew Thompson who has one complete arm, his right arm does not have a forearm or hand. He was born that way. He was one of the best players for the Magpies by kicking four goals. He says he does not want to be treated differently than any other player. He marks, bounces and kicks the footy as good as any other player, better than most I suggest.

The Division One game resulted in the Southport Sharks 17.14 (116) defeating the Zillmere Eagles 16.8 (104) and winning two Premiership flags in succession. There was a big crowd at Carrara to see three games on the day. Richard Champion sang the National Anthem before the big game. The 1sts game was recorded by our local community TV station Briz 31 which I believe will be shown on air before the AFL Grand Final between the West Coast Eagles and the Sydney Swans on Saturday the 30th of September 2006. Carn the Swans.

2007 Grand Finals

The Division One game resulted in the Mt. Gravatt Vultures defeating the Southport Sharks at the Carrara Stadium.

2008 Grand Finals

The Division One game resulted in the Southport Sharks 18.7 (115) defeating the Morningside Panthers 15.17 (107) at the Carrara Stadium

2009 Grand Finals

The Division One game resulted in the Morningside Panthers 14.10 (94) defeating the Mt. Gravatt Vultures 8.15 (63) at Giffen Park.
