Football Grounds Sandgate
Edited
I hope to give some brief information about football grounds in Brisbane. It's a pity I had not taken photos over the decades of all the grounds I have seen football played at. Since about 1956 when I first saw games at the Sandgate Football Club. I now have a digital camera so it's so easy to take photographs. I take a series of images and using The GIMP I make panoramic images by joining the images together.
This is a sad image of the now unused Sandgate Football Club ground that is on Lemke Road, Taigum. The club moved to this ground about 1974 from a ground in Deagon where I first saw games played. I took the photos in late November. The club was closed in September and was in a dilapidated state already. If someone could please give me more information about the Sandgate Club let me know. I have been in contact with John Holmes who played for Sandgate.
Here I stood next to the Club looking westward. The buildings on the left side rise have been built since I last saw a game here in about 2003. Just below the centre of those houses one can see a short length of advertising signs on the boundary fence. The southwestern goal posts are behind them. At the far side are two floodlight poles; about there is a windsock. I have never seen a windsock if I remember correctly, at any other Brisbane ground. The northern end goal posts can't be seen but are near the green building about ¾ of the way along the photo. That building was the Junior Club's canteen and player's dressing rooms.
Sandgate are now playing in the AFLQ Division two, the Pineapple Hotel Cup.
More about the club 2008
I decided to see the first round of the AFLQ Division two, Pineapple Cup at Sandgate's old Lemke Road venue. As from 2006 I want to do the environmental thing and go to footy games by bus or train. I traveled to the club ground by bus on a Saturday which stops within 20mt of it. It was about 10.00am when I arrived and there were only a “handful” of eager club volunteers setting up a BBQ and drink stand under the club building awning. I spoke to the team president, Barry McPherson who told me things were looking bright again for the Hawks. Later on I spoke to John Collins who is the Club President who also informed me that if all goes to plan the club building would re-open some time in the near future.

I had a very enjoyable day at the Hawks ground who I used to cheer on decades ago. I wish all the Sandgate members and supporters all the best and will enjoy a beer in their “new” club some time. I saw two good games between the Maroochydore/Northshore Roos and the Sandgate Hawks. By about 3.00pm I counted about 200 cars parked in the ground car parks. Carn Hawks.
The Sandgate Hawks Sporting Club 2011
I visited the club in April 2011 to see both the new club building and to see Sandgate play Springwood. I picked a good day as the 2nds (Reserves) team won the 2010 premiership. So the Flag was unfurled prior to the 1sts (Seniors) game. I spoke to the President, John Collins and some Sandgate players of decades past. John invited me to join the little group to talk and enjoy some finger food and a couple of beers, thanks John!

It is a credit to the club because of their persistancee the Hawks will go from strength to strength. Hopefully similar to how I knew the club decades ago. I took some video and photos on the day. One short video clip which John Collins aggreed for me to do with him is quite good. I also mentioned that I have many copies of the Football Record from the 1960s which I could lend the club to add to its history records. . Carn Hawks. |
