My GNU/Linux Page One

Updated 14th. of November 2017..:

This page I have built using GNU/Linux OpenOffice.Org Writer

I have used the GNU/Linux Operating System (OS) since 1995, at present I use MINT V 17.

The Linux Kernel was developed by Linus Torvalds early in the 1990s. Linus pronounces Linux this way so listen so you will pronounce it correctly.

Richard Stallman and other men had been working on the GNU system which is part of Linux system. That's a broad description which I hope to expand on in a later page. It is an Open Source System which very briefly means it can be worked on and edited by anyone with the ability but all changes must be known by all other persons working on the OS. The various types of Linux come as what is referred to as a Distribution. Below are the names of seven Distributions of Linux. Mandrake has been changed to Mandriva and if you you want to know why the name change this site will tell you.

Debian

SUSE

Corel

MINT

Red Hat

Mandriva

UBUNTU

Since January 2014 I have been using MINT V 17. It cost me nothing other than the cost of the computer magazine which was about $15.00 in 2014.

Software that is "bundled" with most distributions is quite extensive which means about a hundred. The main Applications that I use are, LibreOffice, OpenOffice.Org Writer, Mozilla, Thunderbird, X-CD-Roast, WinFF, FileZilla, The Gimp and others. I use two virtual screens that I can switch between which is very handy. There are many features that Linux has had for years that MSoft have finally put some in their OS such as MS XP. Of course as with any OS there are some problems installing the Linux OS' but these are being ironed out/fixed.
